The novel coronavirus has brought trouble to us. Since last December, China has taken unprecedented measures to fight the virus.

President Xi Jinping has been directing national prevention and control work. During a series of meetings, he said that governments at all levels should put public health and safety first. The State Council set up the Central Leading Group for Epidemic Response Premier Li Keqiang is the leader of the group and went to Wuhan to instruct their work.

To better control the epidemic, some officials in Hubei were removed for their slow response and poor measures. New officials soon took their place. Local health officials have been asked to report clear statistics and treat patients on time.

“Under such special circumstances, people who can do the job better should be given the responsibility to do it,” Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the US, told NPR. “And this is a very heavy responsibility.”

By pooling the strength of the whole country, China has built its prevention and control system. The latest reports show that new infections have greatly dropped. Several provinces have recorded zero new infections.

China’s ideas have been widely praised and could be used in other countries. Bruce Aylward, leader of a WHO team that visited China, said to the New York Times that using them in other places will take “speed, imagination and political courage,” he said.
